THE BIGGER PICTURE:
RedBird chief Cardinale reportedly made the decision to cut ways with Maldini and Massara after a brief chat. The two had been in control of contracts and transfers, but disagreements over player investment and recruitment tactics are alleged to have caused reorganization at the top of the Serie A powerhouse.
AND WHAT’S MORE:
Giorgio Furlani, CEO of Milan, assumed a leadership position during contract negotiations with Rafael Leao, who has since agreed to new terms. This power struggle is thought to have contributed to Maldini’s departure from the club. When Maldini and former CFO Zvonimir Boban opposed the decision to choose Ralf Rangnick as the club’s new manager in 2019, Furlani and former chief executive Ivan Gazidis sought to convince him to do so. As a result, the latter left his position.
WHAT NEXT? Fans will be upset to lose another club legend because Maldini has spent his whole career with Milan, both as a player and a director. Furlani, on the other hand, is anticipated to assume more responsibility alongside head scout Geoffrey Moncada, and Igli Tare, who will not be renewing his contract as director of sport at the Rome-based team, Lazio, might be recruited.
