Alex Iwobi has expressed his support for Andros Townsend following his release from Everton.

Townsend was not given a new contract at Goodison Park since his current contract expired this week, making him a free agent.

The 31-year-old joined the Toffees on a free transfer in July 2021 and scored five goals in 23 appearances, with Rafa Benitez praising his quality and noting that he works ‘very’ hard.

Townsend, on the other hand, suffered a cruciate ligament injury in March 2022 and had yet to play for the Toffees before being released.

The winger addressed his exit on Instagram, writing, ‘So my time at Everton has come to an end. Although I am disappointed that I was unable to recover from my injuries in time to assist last season, I will always remember and cherish these events from my first season.’

Along with numerous messages of encouragement from supporters, Iwobi was quick to respond with ‘Legend!’ in the comments section. Townsend then answered with a really amusing ‘Iwobinho’ message.

Despite beginning their careers with different teams, the pair certainly became friends upon Townsend’s debut on Merseyside. Townsend spent 16 years with Tottenham before joining Newcastle United, while Iwobi spent the same amount of time at Everton till 2019.

Andros Townsend was a good servant, but he was never good enough to play for Everton.

Andros Townsend was a tireless worker who showed flashes of quality throughout his time at Everton, including his Premier League Goal of the Month against Burnley, his first goal for the club.

However, the 31-year-old was never good enough for the Toffees and should never have been signed in the first place by Rafa Benitez.

While Everton fans will be grateful for his brief appearance, the club is making the right decision by releasing the ‘dead wood’ and hopefully bringing in some more talent.
