Italy legend and 1982 Ballon d’Or award winner, Paolo Rossi passed away in
December 2020 at the age of 64 in what was a sad day for the football community and
fans in the country and around the globe.
Rossi is widely remembered for his heroics in front of goal which helped Italy
to win the 1982 World Cup and for his part in Giovanni Trapattoni’s all-conquering Juventus side
Rossi was one of the most vital players of the Juventus squad in the 1980s.
He scored 43 goals in 137 appearances for Juventus. Rossi won two Serie A titles, the
Coppa Italia, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the European
Cup. So, Cristiano Ronaldo is the first recipient of this award. The 36-year-old had
a dream in the last season for Juventus. He scored 29 goals and finished as Serie A’s
leading scorer for the first time in his career. And with this milestone, Ronaldo also
became the only player to achieve the feat in the Premier League, La Liga, and Italy’s
top flight.
