Jordan Poole is the newest addition to the Washington Wizards roster as the team’s aggressive summer continues.

The Washington Wizards have traded Chris Paul to the Golden State Warriors in return for Jordan Poole, a 2027 second-round pick, Ryan Rollins, and a 2030 protected first-round pick, as originally reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Unlike the meagre returns obtained in the Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis trades, Washington outperformed in this transaction. They not only received an additional first-round selection, but they also received a potential young player in Poole in return for an ageing point guard who was unlikely to play for them.

Poole’s prime is still ahead of him

Jordan Poole, 24, has shown a lot of potential in his four years with the Golden State Warriors.

After suffering a lot as a rookie, he improved a lot over the years and became a very vital element of the Warriors’ rotation. He was outstanding during Golden State’s championship run in 2022, averaging 17 points and 3.8 assists on 51% shooting from the field.

He scored more than 20 points per game last season, but his efficiency and postseason performance suffered. It’s worth noting that Draymond Green notoriously punched Jordan Poole in training camp at the outset of the season. The significance of this occurrence on Poole and the Warriors cannot be overstated.

Poole struggled offensively in the playoffs, shooting only 25% from three-point range. Poole’s shooting not falling, along with his defensive shortcomings, resulted in him losing minutes in the postseason rotation.

Poole’s electrifying skill set is undeniable

Poole’s brilliance, though, cannot be denied. He is an explosive scorer with an explosive first step and the ability to go to the hoop. He is a three-level scorer who can make off-the-dribble three-pointers, finish in the paint, and get to the free-throw line. Players that can score 20 points per game while being above-league average in efficiency are difficult to come by.

The Warriors’ major reason for parting ways with Poole was financial. Poole’s four-year deal extension begins next season at $28.7 million, and the Warriors face a financial pinch in the future, especially with the new collective bargaining agreement.

Given the disagreement between Draymond Green and Poole, Golden State had no choice but to let Poole leave.

Poole is in desperate need of a new beginning. He needs to regain his confidence, as streaky scorers normally do. And he has a terrific chance to accomplish so with the Wizards. He might be the team’s main scorer and spend as much time as he likes exploring the studio area. If he keeps improving, the Wizards will have a long-term player on their hands.

There are still areas of improvement for Poole to take the next step

Poole will need to improve on defence to get to the next level and become a reliable starter. Throughout most of his Golden State career, his lack of effort and attention was evident.
