Bayern sign Guerreiro on free transfer from Dortmund

Bayern Munich announced on Friday that they had signed Portugal left defender Raphael Guerreiro on a free transfer from rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Guerreiro, whose contract with Dortmund expires on June 30, has agreed to terms with Bayern on a three-year agreement. The 29-year-old will return with Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel, who signed him from Lorient in 2016.

“When the call came from Bayern, I made a quick decision,” Guerreiro explained. “It’s an honour to be able to play for this great club, and I have a lot of respect for Thomas Tuchel from our time together at Dortmund.”

Guerreiro played with Dortmund for seven years, appearing in almost 200 games and scoring 40 goals. He has 64 caps for Portugal and won the 2016 European Championship.

Guerreiro is mostly a defender, but he can also play as a left flank and in midfield. He has four goals and 12 assists in the Bundesliga last season, when Bayern Munich beat Dortmund on goal difference to claim their 11th straight league title.

In 2016, the latest player to transfer from Dortmund to Bayern was defender Mats Hummels. Three years later, he returned to the Ruhr valley club.
