Amid offensive troubles, Yankees make a critical coaching decision.

According to YES Network’s Jack Curry, the New York Yankees have dismissed hitting coach Dillon Lawson.

Dillon Lawson has been the Yankees’ hitting coach since the 2022 season after Marcus Thames was let go at the end of the previous season. Lawson’s concept is shared across the Yankees organization’s lower levels.

In his 26 years as general manager, Brian Cashman has never fired a coach in the middle of a season, but it appears he has had enough of Lawson. Aaron Judge’s injury has devastated the team, but the offence has struggled, even with veteran stars like Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo.

Another narrative that backfired on Dillon Lawson was the infamous Anthony Volpe chicken parmesan story. Anthony Volpe was struggling, so he went out for chicken parmesan with old minor league colleague Austin Wells. Volpe and Austin Wells reviewed the footage, and Wells advised Volpe to tighten his stance further, as he had done in the lower leagues. Volpe has done well since then.

Cashman discussed the decision to terminate Lawson.

“I don’t make these decisions lightly,” Brian Cashman said, via Brendan Kuty of The Athletic. “I felt like this was necessary. Our offense has struggled mightily.”

According to Brendan Kuty, Cashman also stated that the next hitting coach would come from outside the organisation, and that he hopes to have the new hitting coach in place by the time the Yankees begin their first series following the All-Star break in Colorado against the Rockies.

The Yankees enter the All-Star breakout of a playoff spot. They will have to hope the new hitting coach helps the offense improve in the second half, with or without Aaron Judge.
