Popular police detective, DCP Abba Kyari entangled in Hushpuppi fraud scandal

Popular crack detective and celebrity police officer, Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been linked to disgraced Nigerian internet fraudster, Abbas Ramon, alias Hushpuppi.

According to documents released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), DCP Kyari, sometime in September 2019, left his job in Nigeria and flew to Dubai to have a lavish time with Hushpuppi.

The Street Journal had earlier reported that Hushpuppi was set to plead guilty to multimillion-dollar internet fraud charges leveled against him, an offence that could see him being sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Additional documents showing how Mr Kyari was indicted as a member of Mr Abbas’ syndicate have been uncovered.

The documents stated that during the Dubai trip, Hushpuppi “sent a car and driver to drive” Mr Kyari around the city, adding that at the time, Mr Kyari bragged to Hushpuppi about some of his crime-busting activities in Nigeria, to which Hushpuppi responded by playing allegiance to him.

Hushppupi told Kyari in an intercepted message, “Am really happy to be ur boy. I promise to be a good boy to u sir.”

In a document by the U.S. Department of Justice, Kyari is mentioned to have been carrying out Hushpuppi’s order to arrest and jail a fellow conspirator, Kelly Chibuzo Vincent, in a fraud scheme after a disagreement over a $1.1 million dupe of a Qatari businessperson.

The court documents said there was a dispute amongst members of the fraud cartel which made one of the gang members, Kelly Chibuzo Vincent to rat on the others, a move that incensed Hushpuppi who reached out to Abba Kyari to arrange Vincent’s arrest and jail.

The document reads in part:

“Court documents outline a dispute among members of the conspiracy, which allegedly prompted Vincent to contact the victim and claim that Abbas and Juma were engaged in fraud. After this contact, Abbas allegedly arranged to have Vincent jailed in Nigeria by Abba Alhaji Kyari, 46, of Nigeria. According to the affidavit, Kyari is a highly decorated deputy commissioner of the Nigeria Police Force who is alleged to have arranged for Vincent to be arrested and jailed at Abbas’ behest, and then sent Abbas photographs of Vincent after his arrest. Kyari also allegedly sent Abbas bank account details for an account into which Abbas could deposit payment for Vincent’s arrest and imprisonment.”

Abba Kyari has been hailed at various points as a dogged police officer who has cracked down on violent crimes in Nigeria, including kidnapping and armed banditry and robbery. Similarly, the House of Representatives led by Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila had at one of its special plenary sessions, honoured Mr Kyari for his heroism.
