Detectives from the Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos, apprehended two alleged Internet fraudsters who specialised in hacking into people’s accounts and stealing their money.

According to sources, the suspects, Yusuf Ademola and Adesina Olawale Abiodun, admitted to hacking into over 5000 accounts of various persons, including those with the United Bank for Africa (UBA).

According to a statement made available to The Guardian by the Zonal Public Relations Officer (PRO), Hauwa Idris Adamu, there are more members of the gang, and the police have widened their dragnet to chase down fleeing members of the syndicate.

“On May 8, 2023, a petition was submitted by UBA to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) that there are some syndicates that specialise in Internet fraud of various banks in Nigeria, most notably UBA, in which they hack into customers’ accounts and move their monies,” according to the statement.

“Based on the petition, the AIG assembled a team of detectives from the Zonal Monitoring Unit, swung into action with the aid of modern technology, and two suspects- Yusuf Ademola’m’, 40, and Adesina Olawale Abiodun,’m’, 50- were apprehended at their hideout in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.”

“The suspects confessed to the crime, saying they have many syndicates all over Nigeria and use software to hack into customers’ accounts and move their money undetected from any bank they want.”

“However, the fraudsters’ method is to have a customer’s BVN linked phone number and bank alert for easy money transfer.” As a result, over 1000 clients’ accounts across the country have been hacked and scammed.

“Further investigation into the incident revealed that members of the syndicates came from all over the country.”

“All efforts are being made to apprehend all suspects associated with this crime.”

Meanwhile, the investigation is still underway, and suspects will be charged in court as soon as the inquiry is completed.”
