BREAKING: President Tinubu Signs Into Law Bill Raising Judges’ Retirement Age

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the 1999 Constitutional Amendment Bill relating to the retirement age of Nigerian judicial personnel.

According to POLITICS NIGERIA, President Tinubu signed the measure, which attempts to ensure consistency in the retirement age for judges, into law after it was submitted by the departing 9th National Assembly.

On Thursday, Abiodun Oladunjoye, the President’s Director of Information, issued a brief statement announcing the President’s assent to the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fifth Alteration) (No. 37), 2023.” The new law includes many measures concerning the retirement age and pension entitlements of judicial personnel.

President Tinubu underscored his administration’s commitment to bolstering the judiciary, supporting the rule of law, and equipping judicial personnel to carry out their jobs efficiently at the signing ceremony.

The retirement age for High Court judges has been raised from 65 to 70 years following the passage of the amendment law.

This move intends to maintain the longevity of experienced judges in the legal system, so adding to the Nigerian judiciary’s stability and effectiveness.
