The All-Electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 Ready To Race

Is the world ready for a 1,400-horsepower electric race car?

32

Last April, Ford fired back at Chevrolet’s awesome pure-electric eCOPO Camaro drag racer, and treated us to a taste of the possible future of drag racing in the process, by unveiling a battery-electric factory drag racer of its own: the 1,400-horsepower Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. Capable of a blistering quarter-mile in the low-eight-second range, and a top speed in excess of 170 mph, the quoted performance is nothing short of sensational.

Now, the Cobra Jet 1400 is finally ready for its public drag racing debut, with an exhibition appearance planned for the NHRA US Nationals on Labor Day weekend.

You yourself can see the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 live and in-person. While the global pandemic has forced the cancellation of numerous public events, including more than a few auto shows, the NHRA US Nationals is still scheduled to go on as planned, with spectators in attendance, although the Lucas Oil Speedway in Indianapolis is taking precautions.

If you’d just as soon not risk it, the NHRA US Nationals will also be broadcast between Fox, Fox Sports 1, and Fox Sports 2, so you can still catch the Cobra Jet 1400’s drag racing debut from the comfort of your home.

The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 makes the same 1,400 horsepower as the Mustang Mach-E 1400 Ford showed off last month, but we gather that’s more a matter of coincidence than anything: where the Cobra Jet 1400 peaks at a relatively humble 1,100 lb-ft of torque, the Mach-E 1400, with its seven-motor AWD system, puts out a tire-torturing 2,300 lb-ft.

As a matter of fact, outside of its peak horsepower and torque figures, Ford has shared essentially no details of the Cobra Jet 1400’s pure-electric powertrain, preferring to keep those details close to its chest. Perhaps we’ll learn more when the electric drag racing missile hits the Lucas Oil Raceway this Labor Day weekend.
